Diet for bowel cancer

Oncology is a terrible diagnosis that every person is afraid of. But cancer with the modern development of medicine has ceased to sound like a death sentence, but only in the case of timely access to specialists and adequate treatment.

Bowel cancer is most common in people over the age of 40. This is an oncological disease that requires the patient to be treated for a long time and in a complex. A diet for bowel cancer is an important component of success.

It is very important to follow a diet for intestinal oncology. But we should pay attention to how we eat throughout our lives, so that errors in the menu do not lead to a hospital bed.

Doctors recommend that all people who seek to avoid gastrointestinal diseases (and this is not only bowel cancer) include such products in their diet:

  • marine fish – a source of essential amino acids;
  • fresh vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts, which contain a lot of coarse fiber, which perfectly cleanses the intestines of all kinds of toxins and
  • prevents the development of constipation;
  • fresh beef or chicken liver (only of high quality, from an animal that has been fed without the use of antibiotics and growth stimulants);
  • vegetable oils – sunflower, olive, linseed, corn (preferably unrefined);
  • seafood, in particular sea cabbage;
  • sprouted cereals;
  • porridge.

Eating fast food, semi-finished products, exclusively fried, fatty and spicy food will lead to deplorable results.

Treatment and nutrition

Alas, the methods of treating bowel cancer are very aggressive. This is surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy. But it is this treatment that will give a result that will help, if not completely cured, then prolong life and improve its quality.

The diet during chemotherapy for bowel cancer should consist of the following products (this is an approximate diet, and the patient chooses those products that are most suitable for him):

  • dairy products with low or zero fat content;
  • slimy, well-boiled porridge with a small amount of butter (preferably without salt and sugar);
  • fruits and vegetables must be heat-treated – boiled, baked and chopped (in limited quantities);
  • soups in vegetable broth with the addition of a small amount of whole milk (but be sure to boil over);
  • green or herbal tea, jelly made from non-sour fruits, compotes (preferably from dried fruits, since this is a source of natural electrolytes).

The diet for bowel cancer after surgery will be almost the same, with the only difference that the doctor will write down your diet and give recommendations on when exactly you can switch to such a diet after parenteral.

The diet for colon cancer, as with other types of this oncology, is subject to the following rules:

  1. Meals are necessarily fractional (porridges, purees, soups, chopped dishes) and in small portions, but often enough so as not to overload the intestines. It is recommended to eat at least 6 times a day, but gastroenterologists insist that food be taken exclusively at will.
  2. The temperature of the dishes consumed should not be extreme – that is, too high or too low temperature of the food is not allowed. If the food is approximately the same as the body temperature, it will not cause discomfort or irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.
  3. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates should be balanced as follows: proteins – 15%, fats – 30%, carbohydrates – 55%.

Stages of the disease

First, we will discuss the general rules of nutrition for bowel cancer at any stage. They must be observed in order to avoid painful symptoms and not provoke relapses.

Protein products of animal origin (meat, fish, offal, seafood) must either be boiled or steamed and crushed before use. It is good to make meat or fish purees, mousses, pates. Well, at the very least finely chopped cutlets. It is absolutely impossible to fry such products!!!
A taboo is imposed on fresh whole milk, it is not recommended to eat it even in boiled form (it is allowed to add it to soups and porridges, diluting with water at least 1:1). Alcoholic beverages, even low-alcohol, provoke irritation of the gastrointestinal tract and aggravate the disease. The same applies to seasonings, spices and spices.


The amount of liquid should be sufficient, but not large. Together with soups, compotes and other liquid dishes, the daily norm is about 5 liters.

The diet for stage 2 bowel cancer recommends including food rich in selenium in the diet:

  • seafood and sea fish;
  • beef and pork liver;
  • eggs;
  • cereals (especially unprocessed rice, wheat);
  • broccoli cabbage, parsnips and parsley;
  • legumes;
  • dried fruits, nuts, seeds.

The diet for stage 3 intestinal cancer includes the same products, only they must necessarily be fractional, mushy, so as not to damage the mucous membrane.

Diet for stage 4 intestinal cancer is, unfortunately, nutrition through a probe. There are cases when the patient can eat independently for some time. Then the food is prepared only liquid, so that it can be absorbed and leave the body unhindered.

The diet for intestinal cancer with metastases depends on the stage of the disease and the halo of the proliferation of metastases on the gastrointestinal tract, It will be prescribed by a doctor, taking into account all the features of the course of the disease.

It is better to lead a healthy lifestyle, eat right and give up bad habits in order to maintain health. After all, it is easier to protect than to restore.
