Fast food consumption and its impact on human health

Fast food fast food, such a popular means of snacking in the modern world is not a new idea at all. For centuries, people have found ways to cook and sell food at roadside stands or kiosks. Quickly cooked food appeared so that travelers and hard workers could have a quick snack. In today’s world, fast food is a global industry that is increasingly criticized for its menu, which includes a high calorie content, and low nutritional value.

It is generally believed that the Chicago Fair in 1904 played a major role in the growth of the popularity of fast food in modern society, it was after it that products that do not require long cooking were firmly introduced into the life of Western society. Hot dog, hamburger, ice cream – all these are familiar products for anyone around the world.

In 1920, White Castle Burgers opened its first fast-food hamburger store in Kansas. White Castle Burgers is considered the first fast food restaurant, and due to its success, other companies such as A&W and McDonald’s soon appeared. Today, fast food companies are a global, multibillion-dollar industry, and the menus of fast food restaurants have gone from cooking the simplest hamburger and French fries to a stunning variety of dishes.

As the world develops, more and more people are opting for fast food to feed their whole family, because many simply cannot have time to cook food. As the name suggests, fast food is a quick and convenient way to get food, besides, recently there has been a huge selection of dishes – burgers, pizza, noodles and so on.

The impact of fast food on the human body.

A question that worries many public and medical figures. Obesity, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are the main diseases that are caused by a passion for fast food. According to a study by the American National Institute of Health, which took place for fifteen years, people who visited fast food restaurants more than twice a week are on average five kilograms heavier and have high insulin resistance.

In response to public unrest over the harmful effects of fast food and related illnesses, many chains have added healthy dishes to their menus.

In 2006, a law was passed in the USA that requires the indication, on the label, not only of nutritional value, but also a list of trans fats used in cooking. Many fast food restaurants, responding to the bill, have reduced the proportion of trans fats that are used in their establishments, or switched to healthier alternatives.

Everyone has long known that eating fast food is far from the healthiest lifestyle. But, nevertheless, people continue to stand in endless queues and pay a lot of money for it.

In fact, an ordinary hamburger causes much more damage to our health than global warming. Obesity due to fast food is a serious problem, for example, in the USA. This pressing issue even reached the White House, the first lady of the country, Michelle Obama, started a public company called “Let’s move!“, with the aim of lifting the younger generation off the sofas.

Fast food meals have penetrated so tightly into the rhythm of modern man’s life that people often began to consider it a regular meal, and not dishes prepared at home. At the moment, there are chips on sale with zero trans fats, pizza with low-fat cheese, and so on. So-called “healthy” fast food options are dangerous and deceptive, and ultimately cause a lot of harm.

Let’s look at the examples of what is the calorie content of fast food:

  • Ten chicken nuggets contain 470 calories, of which 33 grams of fat and 950 mg of sodium;
  • And a slice of pepperoni pizza contains 700 calories, 33g of fat and 1530 mg of sodium.

Calories in fast food can easily exceed the daily norm for a healthy adult several times.

Regular consumption of fast food can lead to a decrease in libido in both men and women. The lack of antioxidants, or omega-3, which are practically absent in this food, greatly affects mental health. Many people ask a reasonable question, what is fast food made of, and why, often, it is so delicious. Everything that seems delicious to us in fast food is synthetic, and is classified as preservatives, emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers, flavor enhancers that cause stress and mood swings.

And sodium glutamate, which is a permanent component of processed foods, is known to cause headaches.

Young women who regularly eat junk food are very susceptible to polycystic ovary syndrome. Going to fast food during pregnancy will most likely lead to the birth of children who will be prone to obesity in the future, as well as at higher risk of diabetes and high cholesterol. Chemicals used in preservatives can make children hyperactive. And processed meats used in fast foods are known to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

People don’t often think about how much fast food is digested either. Due to the fact that fast food is food for hurrying people, food gets into the stomach in large chunks. In addition, fast food snacks are usually accompanied by cold carbonated drinks, and fatty foods are not sufficiently broken down. All this has a bad effect on the digestive tract, and greatly slows down digestion.

An equally important question is whether fast food is profitable for your wallet? Only at first glance, it seems to us that food in such establishments is not so expensive. Of course, in comparison with upscale restaurants and cafes, fast food pleases with its low prices. But after calculating these numbers a little in your mind, you will understand that cooking at home is much more profitable, and, most importantly, more useful.

Although fast food and healthy eating are two extremely opposite concepts, such a way of snacking in rare cases may be acceptable. But, nevertheless, it is better to treat yourself to healthy, homemade food from fresh products. Eat your favorite unhealthy food, which, in truth, sometimes you really, really want, a couple of times a month, but no more.
